The rule that decides every weapon choice
Valheim has no single “best weapon”. Two things beat raw damage numbers:
- Damage type. Enemies resist and are weak to specific types. A weaker weapon with the right type finishes a fight faster than a stronger one that is resisted.
- Weapon skill. Every weapon class has its own skill, raised by using it. A well-used mid-tier weapon commonly out-performs a fresh craft from the next tier because the skill bonus applies on top.
So the practical question is never “what is strongest”, it is “what stays worth its materials for the longest”.
Best weapon by progression stage
| Stage | Melee to target | Ranged to target | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Club, Flint Spear | Crude Bow | Cheap, no rare materials, teaches the stamina rhythm |
| Black Forest | Bronze Mace, Bronze Atgeir | Finewood Bow | Blunt carries into the Swamp; the atgeir sweep clears greydwarf packs |
| Swamp | Iron Mace | Huntsman Bow | Blunt is the answer to blobs, skeletons and Bonemass |
| Mountain | Frostner, Silver Sword | Draugr Fang | Frostner’s blunt + frost + spirit mix is the game’s best all-rounder |
| Plains | Porcupine, Blackmetal Atgeir, Black Metal Sword | Draugr Fang (keep) | Raw damage for fulings; Porcupine covers mixed resistances |
| Mistlands | Mistwalker, Krom, Himminafl | Spinesnap, Arbalest | Slash plus frost, and the first real two-handed endgame options |
| Ashlands | Nidhögg, Berserkir Axes | Ash Fang | Gem-socket weapons: variants change the damage type, not just the number |
| Deep North (1.0) | Nord (Bloodgold), Frostfire, Thunderblood | Nord Bow / Crossbow, Frostfire / Thunderblood ranged | Bloodgold weapons finished in a Frost Foundry. Nord is the base tier; Frostfire adds frost+fire and Thunderblood adds lightning — but elemental damage is resisted by Kall, so pure blunt/Slash Nord weapons lead that fight |
Verified (1.0): the per-hit damage values below are confirmed against valheim.wiki (1.0), cross-checked with gamecore.wiki and 5gamers. This page still ranks by role and damage type — a weaker weapon with the right type beats a stronger one that is resisted. See our verification workflow.
Per-hit damage (min / max, valheim.wiki 1.0)
| Weapon | Damage (min / max) | Type | Stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Club | 12 / 30 | Blunt | Meadows |
| Iron Spear | 55 / 73 | Pierce | Black Forest |
| Iron Axe | 60 / 75 | Slash | Black Forest |
| Iron Sword | 55 / 73 | Slash | Swamp |
| Iron Atgeir | 65 / 83 | Pierce | Swamp |
| Iron Mace | 55 / 73 | Blunt | Swamp |
| Iron Battleaxe | 70 / 88 | Slash | Mountain |
| Black Metal Battleaxe | 110 / 128 | Slash | Plains |
| Skull Splittur | 130 / 148 | Slash | Mistlands |
| Krom (greatsword) | 150 / 168 | Slash | Mistlands |
| Slayer (greatsword) | 170 / 188 | Slash | Mistlands / Ashlands |
Attack speed is not published here (the source lists stamina cost per swing, not a flat attack rate), so compare weapons by the damage above plus your skill in the class. The Deep North (Bloodgold / Frostfire / Thunderblood) line is a 1.0 late-game tier whose per-hit values sit one step above the Mistlands tier.
Weapons that stay useful across biomes
- Any bow. Ranged pulls single enemies out of packs and opens boss fights safely. Bow skill keeps paying off even when you swap bows.
- Frostner. Frost slow is crowd control, and spirit damage keeps working on undead from the Swamp all the way into late-game regions.
- Draugr Fang. The bow most players keep for the longest; its innate poison means arrow choice matters less.
- A blunt weapon you can swap to on demand. Skeletons, blobs and Bonemass all take bonus blunt damage, and you will meet skeletons long after the Swamp.
Weapons you can safely skip
- Heavy investment in starter weapons — upgrade them only while they still kill current enemies quickly.
- Crafting every branch of a weapon line once you reach the gem-socket tier. Pick the variant that matches your damage type and commit.
- Replacing a weapon purely because a new tier exists. Check whether upgrading what you already carry gets you through the next biome first — it usually does.
Upgrade priority
Upgrades are gated by your crafting stations, not by materials alone: raising a weapon’s quality needs the right station level, which means the upgrade pieces beside your Workbench, Forge or Black Forge matter as much as the ore you smelt. The full list of which piece belongs to which station is on the workstations guide.
Priority order that works for most runs: station upgrades → one main melee → one bow → shield → the rest.
Pairing weapons with Forsaken Powers
Powers are timed buffs you activate before a push, and the right one changes what weapon you want in your hand. Bonemass’s power makes a shield-and-club build extremely durable; Eikthyr’s power keeps you mobile while kiting; Moder’s power is the one to have set while you cross open water to reach a boss. Buy me a coffeeFrequently asked questions
- What is the best weapon in Valheim?
- There is no single answer. Frostner is the most consistently recommended all-round melee pick because it mixes blunt, frost and spirit damage, and Draugr Fang is the bow most players keep for several biomes. Ashlands gem weapons out-damage both on paper, but only if the damage type matches what you are fighting.
- Should I craft every new weapon tier?
- No. Weapon skill level matters more than tier: a heavily used lower-tier weapon you have skill in usually beats a fresh craft you have no skill with. Pick one or two weapon types per progression stage and commit to them.
- Does damage type really matter more than damage numbers?
- Yes. Enemies resist and are weak to specific types — blunt is the answer to skeletons and blobs, spirit works well on most undead (Draugr, Wraiths — Wraiths are actually weak to it; Skeletons take normal Spirit damage, not immune), fire works on greydwarves and roots. A weaker weapon with the right type ends fights faster.
- What weapon should I use against Bonemass?
- An Iron Mace (blunt). Bonemass is weak to blunt and frost, resistant to fire, pierce and slash, and immune to poison and stagger — so a blunt mace plus Bonemass's own power (free blocking, physical resistance) is the standard Swamp-boss combo.
- What is the best early-game weapon?
- The Club and Crude Bow from the Meadows, then the Bronze Mace once you reach the Black Forest. Weapon skill level matters more than tier, so commit to one or two weapon types early rather than crafting every new tier.
