Block Armor vs Block Force in Valheim

Every shield in Valheim shows two numbers that sound similar but do completely different jobs: Block Armor decides how much damage you take, and Block Force decides how far you shove the attacker back. Mixing them up is the reason some players buy a “hard-hitting” shield and wonder why enemies barely flinch.

Block Armor: the stat that keeps you alive

Block Armor is the shield’s damage reduction. When you block, the attack’s damage is first reduced by your Block Armor, and only the leftover damage continues on to your body armor.

  • Blocking skill adds +0.5% Block Armor per level (up to +50% at level 100).
  • Whatever damage is left over after the block fills your stagger bar, which is 40% of your max health. Fill it and the block fails: you are staggered, take double damage, and the full original damage goes through your armor instead of the reduced amount.
  • Only physical damage (slash, pierce, blunt) and lightning fill the stagger bar. Fire, frost, poison and spirit are still reduced by Block Armor but cannot stagger you through the shield.
  • Leftover damage also decides stamina cost: less leftover damage, less stamina burned.

In short: Block Armor keeps you alive, keeps your stagger bar low, and saves stamina.

Block Force: the stat that pushes enemies away

Block Force is the knockback you deal back to the attacker when a block connects. It does not reduce damage at all.

  • Its actual strength scales with your Block Armor (roughly 50–100% of it), so a sturdier shield shoves harder.
  • Blocking also reduces the knockback you take, again based on your Block Armor.

In short: Block Force is crowd control, not protection. A high Block Force shield buys you space — useful against packs — but it will not save you from a heavy hit.

Parry: where the two stats multiply

A parry is a block raised within about 0.25 seconds before the hit lands. On a successful parry your Block Armor is multiplied by the item’s parry bonus, no stamina is spent, and most enemies are staggered (bosses are largely immune):

Item type Parry bonus
Knife 4×
Flesh Rippers 6×
Buckler 2.5×
Axe, sword, mace, spear, pickaxe, atgeir 2×
Round shield 1.5×
Tower shield cannot parry

Because the parry multiplier applies to Block Armor, a buckler with modest Block Armor can parry hits that would stagger you on a normal block — but mistimed parries let the attack land in full.

Every shield compared (1.0 data)

Values below are the shield’s own stats; your Blocking skill multiplies the Block Armor on top of these numbers.

Shield Block Armor Block Force Parry Force
Wood Shield 6 40 20
Wood Tower Shield 10 40 100
Bronze Buckler 16 40 30
Iron Buckler 28 40 30
Bone Tower Shield 32 40 100
Iron Shield 35 40 30
Banded Shield 42 50 40
Shield of Roots 48 40 40
Iron Tower Shield 52 40 100
Serpent Scale Shield 60 50 100
Silver Shield 60 50 40
Black Metal Shield 78 50 50
Carapace Buckler 78 50 50
Nord Buckler 88 40 30
Carapace Shield 96 50 60
Black Metal Tower Shield 104 50 150
Flametal Shield 114 50 50
Nord Shield 132 50 50
Flametal Tower Shield 140 50 150
Nord Greatshield 158 50 150

Two patterns worth noticing:

  • Block Force barely moves (40–50 for almost every shield), because it is meant to scale off your Block Armor and skill, not to be a progression stat on its own.
  • Parry Force jumps on tower shields (100–150), but they cannot parry — that force only applies to the knockback of a normal block, which is exactly the trade tower shields make: maximum Block Armor, zero parry.

Tips

  • Against a heavy hitter you cannot out-block yet, switch to a buckler and parry: the 2.5× multiplier is worth more than raw Block Armor until your gear catches up.
  • If you keep getting staggered while blocking, the fix is almost always more Block Armor (better shield, higher Blocking skill) — not Block Force.
  • Tower shields are the safest pick for ranged pressure and open ground; against fast packs that flank you, a parry-capable shield buys more openings.
  • Elemental attacks (fire, frost, poison, spirit) never stagger through a shield, so blocking casters is much safer than the raw numbers suggest.

Frequently asked questions

Does Block Force reduce damage in Valheim?
No. Block Force only controls how far you knock the attacker back when your block connects. The stat that reduces damage is Block Armor — the attacker's damage is reduced by your Block Armor before the rest hits your body armor.
What fills the stagger bar while blocking?
Only physical damage (slash, pierce, blunt) and lightning fill the stagger bar, which is 40% of your max health. If leftover damage fills it, the block fails and you are staggered. Fire, frost, poison and spirit damage are still reduced by Block Armor but never stagger you through the shield.
How does the Blocking skill affect Block Armor?
Each point of the Blocking skill adds 0.5% Block Armor, up to +50% at skill level 100. That bonus scales everything else too: less leftover damage, less stamina spent, a harder-to-fill stagger bar, and a stronger Block Force.
Do tower shields parry in Valheim?
No. Tower shields cannot parry at all — they trade the parry bonus for the highest Block Armor. Bucklers parry at 2.5× and normal round shields at 1.5×.
