Valheim 1.0 Save Compatibility — Which Patch Fixed What

Do old Valheim saves work in 1.0, and what does each patch fix for a world you already built? Every row is tied to the official FAQ or a specific patch note — with the open questions stated plainly.

The short answer

Your old saves stay where you left them and keep working — and a world created before 1.0 still receives new content.

That is the official 1.0 FAQ's own wording, and it is the only blanket statement the developer has made about compatibility. Everything below is what the patch notes add to it.

Which patch fixed what

If something in your world broke after 1.0, this is the order to check. Newest first.

Version Released What it affects in an existing world
1.0.16 25 Sep 2026 Deep North worlds Terrain modifications in the Deep North could revert after the area unloaded. The note also tells you to repair seams yourself by pickaxing, using the hoe, or walking over snow.
1.0.15 18 Sep 2026 Any world with heavy building Fixed terrain duplications that cost performance — the fix is server-side, so nothing needs rebuilding on your map.
1.0.14 17 Sep 2026 Multiplayer worlds, portals Terrain modification by players or monsters could cause performance and portal problems, terrain seams, and modifications becoming undone. Also fixed characters not saving when you press Save manually on someone else’s server.
1.0.10 & 1.0.12 11 Sep 2026 Item stands, server allow-lists Items removed from armour/item stands no longer lose durability and upgrade level — but only if you have not been near those stands since 1.0 released. Banlist and whitelist files that use old IDs (Steam_…) work again.
1.0 9 Sep 2026 Every pre-1.0 world The official FAQ is explicit: old saves stay where you left them and remain playable, and a world created before the update still receives new content. No conversion step is described.

What we could not verify

  • How Deep North terrain is generated in regions of a pre-1.0 world you had never explored. No official statement describes this, and third-party map tools handle it by letting you pick a world version rather than deriving one — which tells us the generator is version-sensitive, not what happens to unexplored chunks of an old save.
  • Whether the item-stand durability fix in 1.0.10/1.0.12 is retroactive for items already affected. The note only describes the behaviour going forward and asks players not to pull high-level items off stands without a backup.
  • The exact rollout order of each patch per platform. The 1.0.16 note says a few days across all platforms and that crossplay stays functional; it does not list a schedule.

We would rather leave these open than print a plausible-sounding answer. If you have tested one, tell us.

Save compatibility FAQ

Do I need to start a new world for Valheim 1.0?
No. The official 1.0 FAQ states that your old saves will still be where you last left them and that you can continue to play with them, and that a world created before the update still receives new content.
Does my pre-1.0 world get the Deep North?
The FAQ says your world receives new content even if it was created before the update. What we cannot verify from any official statement is how Deep North terrain is generated in regions of an old world you had not yet explored — see the unknown list below rather than assuming either way.
What should I do before updating a world I care about?
Back it up first. The 1.0.16 notes reference the built-in Manage Saves menu, and the week-one hotfix needed a follow-up pass on item stands precisely because a fix arrived after players had already been affected.
Are all platforms on the same patch at the same time?
Not always. The 1.0.16 notes state that the patch takes a few days to reach all platforms due to internal restrictions, while crossplay keeps working across versions.
