Version-verified guide
Do Old Valheim Seeds Still Work After a Version Update?
Same seed, same world — until a patch changes worldgen. What version updates do to your existing save, your seed lists, and how to re-verify the seeds you trust.
By Valheim Field Guide Editorial Team
The short answer
The same seed produces the same world as long as the world-generation version does not change. A patch that only adds items, fixes bugs or tweaks balance does not move a single boss stone. A patch that changes how worlds are generated — a “worldgen change” — gives the same seed a different layout in any world created after the patch.
Two consequences to hold in mind:
- Your existing world is not touched. The map is generated once and stored in the world file; patches do not regenerate it.
- A seed list is a snapshot. A “best seeds” list made before a worldgen change describes the worlds as they were at that version. After the change, some entries still work but their descriptions — boss positions, on-foot distances — may no longer be accurate.
What a patch can and cannot do
| Thing | After an update |
|---|---|
| Your existing world (base, characters, defeated bosses) | Unchanged — it is stored in the world file |
| Unexplored areas of your existing world | Generated under the new rules when you first reach them |
| A new world created with the same seed | Same layout if the worldgen version did not change; different if it did |
| A curated seed list | Verified against the version it was made for — check the version note |
How to tell if a patch changed worldgen
Three signals, in order of reliability:
- The patch notes. Iron Gate calls generation changes out explicitly — “new world generation”, “biome layout changes”, “new biomes added”. If the notes do not mention generation, your seeds almost certainly still hold.
- The world file version. Each world file stores the worldgen version that created it (1.0.12 is worldgen v2). If the game reports a newer worldgen version than the file, newly generated worlds will differ from older ones.
- A landmark check. Create a new world with a seed you know and compare one landmark from spawn with what you remember. One boss stone in the wrong place confirms a generation change.
What this site does about versions
The seed library here is verified against a specific game version — currently 1.0.12 (worldgen v2) — and each seed page carries that version note. When Iron Gate ships a worldgen change, the verification pipeline is re-run across the whole 700+-entry library before it is treated as accurate again. Until then, the version note on the page is the contract: read it before you trust any distance on it.
This is also why this site does not publish static “seed → boss position” tables: the mapping is version-dependent, and only re-verified data is safe to rely on. The mechanics of how a seed drives the layout are in the world seed guide.
Practical checklist after an update
- Back up your world before you launch the updated game (the
.dband.fwlfiles in your world folder) — seconds of work, and the only complete insurance against an unexpected change. - Check the version notes here. If the library is showing a version older than your game, it is mid-re-verification and distances may not match yours yet.
- Re-verify the seeds you rely on with a quick landmark check before sharing them with a group — a seed shared between two different worldgen versions produces two different maps.
- Say the version when you share a seed. “This seed, on 1.0.12” is a different promise than “this seed, on whatever build you have”.
If the update is a major one, the companion question — whether to continue your old world or start fresh — is covered in new save vs old world.

Buy me a coffeeFrequently asked questions
- Is the same seed still the same world after an update?
- Yes — as long as the world generation version did not change. The seed is a deterministic input, so it produces the same layout. If a patch changed world generation, newly created worlds with that seed get a different layout. Your existing world is unaffected either way.
- Does a patch change my existing world?
- No. The generated map is stored in the world file and is not regenerated on update. The one exception is unexplored territory: land you sail to after an update generates under the new rules — which is how new content like the 1.0 Deep North appears in older saves.
- How do I know if the seeds in a library are still accurate?
- Look for a version note on each seed page. While the noted version matches your game version, the distances and boss positions are verified against it. If the note is older than your game, the data may describe the pre-update world — treat it as approximate until the library is re-verified.
- Should I back up my world before an update?
- Yes. Copy the .db and .fwl files out of your world folder before launching the updated game. It takes seconds and is the only complete protection against an unexpected world change.
- Do my characters survive an update?
- Yes. Characters are stored separately from the world file, and updates have never wiped characters. The only thing a worldgen change touches is the map, and only in areas you have not explored yet.
