Valheim Seed Map & World Seed Generator — Preview Any World Before You Load It
Preview your world with a Valheim seed map or world seed generator before you load it: how seed generation works, what a seed viewer shows, how to share seeds, and what seed 0 means.
By Valheim Field Guide Editorial Team
Valheim seeds are deterministic — same seed = same world
Every Valheim world is generated from a seed string. If two players start a world with exactly the same seed, they get exactly the same world — same biome positions, same boss stone locations, same merchant spawn, same ocean routes. This is what makes a seed map valuable: a world seed generator lets you preview your world before you ever load it.
Seeds are not secret codes — any string works. Type whatever you want: valheim, potato, 1234567890, your cat’s name, or the word “asgard”. Seed strings are case sensitive and have a maximum length limit (not publicly documented, but practical use suggests 20–30 characters works fine).
What the seed controls
Biome layout is always deterministic
The seed defines:
- Where each biome spawns (Meadows always on the starter continent; Swamp/Mountain/Plains/Mistlands/Ashlands/Deep North always appear around the world ring)
- Where each Forsaken Boss stone sits (the stone pattern itself is determined by the seed — 7 stones + 1 Deep North stone at 1.0)
- Where Haldor the merchant and Hildir the wanderer spawn
- Where crypts, troll caves, sunken crypts, dwarven fortresses and frost caves spawn
- Ocean routes and island chains
What the seed does not control
The seed does not control:
- Individual tree placement within a biome
- Rock clusters and small surface decorations
- The exact position of workbench-level enemies spawned in your immediate area
- Alternate biomes (1.0’s
altbiomes) — these spawn independently of the main seed pattern but still deterministically once the world is generated
“Seed 0” means “random”
Valheim does not have a “random seed” button at 1.0. To get a random-ish world, create a world with an arbitrary seed string (your phone number, today’s date, the hex colour of your bedroom wall). Valheim will hash that string into an integer internally. Entering 0 as a seed does not mean “random” — it means “the integer 0”, which is a valid seed and produces a known, reproducible world.
Note: The exact seed → world layout (boss-stone positions, biome distances) is generated per seed and shifts with patches, so we point you to tools that compute it live rather than publishing a static table. Our seed map library carries 800+ pre-rendered 1.0 worlds, and the seed finder lists verified seeds where several bosses are walkable from the start — community resources like valheimseedhub and wgen maintain the full mapping in real time, and we focus here on the mechanics. You can also preview your world from any seed instantly in our seed viewer.
What is always true about the layout
Valheim’s world layout is seed-generated: each biome spawns on one or more landmasses determined by the seed, and the distances between biomes vary from world to world. There is no fixed ring or spiral — the map is different every seed. What does not change:
- You always spawn on a Meadows landmass.
- Each Forsaken boss’s altar sits in its own biome — Eikthyr in the Meadows, The Elder in the Black Forest, Bonemass in the Swamp, Moder in the Mountain, Yagluth in the Plains, The Queen in the Mistlands, and the Fader in the Ashlands.
- The Deep North is the farthest biome out, reached by sea after the Ashlands.
Which specific island each biome (and each boss stone) lands on is up to the seed — which is exactly why seed tools and seed-hunting exist.
Note: We are not publishing a fixed “biome ring” or spiral diagram, because one does not exist. Biome positions are generated per seed, so any universal ring schematic would be misleading.
Finding a seed that fits your playstyle
Beginners: pick a seed with a friendly starter continent
Look for:
- Meadows continent with Black Forest within sailing distance of the starter shore (no open-ocean crossing required). You need this for Copper and Tin.
- Swamp not on the starter continent — not required, but saves you from swimming through cold swamps before you have bronze gear.
- Start location not on the edge of the continent — you do not want to build your base right next to a biome border where greydwarves spawn.
Builders: pick a seed with a flat starter
Flat meadows are where everyone’s first base goes. A seed with lots of rolling hills means more terraforming work before you can build a village. Also look for:
- A nearby river or lake for the Water elementals resource chain (founding material for the Workbench’s water filter recipes at 1.0).
- A patch of Forest or Birch close by — the extra wood never hurts.
Co-op groups: pick a seed with a central island
If you have 4–6 players, a seed with a central Meadows continent surrounded by smaller islands (each with a different early biome) lets players spread out and settle separately without sailing 15 minutes.
External seed visualisation tools — scan before you load
Multiple community tools exist that visualise Valheim worlds without loading them in-game. These work by implementing Valheim’s native generation algorithm from the open-source community implementations. At 1.0, the two most useful are:
1. Valheim World Generator (wgen.io)
- Enter any seed string → see the full top-down world map in 2D
- Biome legend, boss stone positions, and merchant location are all marked
- Updated for 1.0 including Deep North and altbiomes
2. Valheim Seed Hub (valheimseedhub.com)
- Community-curated list of seeds tagged by feature (“flat meadows”, “boss stones close together”, “merchant on starter continent”)
- Sort by biome proximity to spawn, boss stone layout, and more
- Seeds rated by other players
These tools are unofficial and community-maintained. 1.0 added altbiomes and the Deep North zone — check the tool’s update date before relying on it, as older versions may not show altbiomes correctly.
How to use a seed in practice
- Decide whether you want to pick from a tool or just type a random seed.
- Launch Valheim → Start Game → New → enter your seed string in the Seed field.
- Valheim generates the world. Fly a cinematic camera (
cinematiccommand in devcommands) to inspect before you commit to building. - If you do not like it, do not save progress on a world you plan to discard — Valheim auto-saves every ~20 minutes even if you have not built anything.
The join-code caveat
A crossplay server uses join codes, not IP addresses. The world name in the server script determines which world file loads, but the seed is baked into that world file once generated. If you switch servers on a rented host, remember: you are not changing a seed on an existing world — you are generating a new world file. Copy your world files (.db and .fwl) before swapping so you do not lose the world you are playing.

Buy me a coffeeFrequently asked questions
- How do I find my Valheim world seed?
- Open the world in the start menu — the seed string you typed at creation is shown there, and it is the only thing that defines your world. Two players using the exact same seed get the exact same world: same biome positions, boss stones, merchant spawn and ocean routes.
- Does typing 0 as a seed make a random world?
- No. Valheim has no 'random seed' button at 1.0. Entering 0 means the integer 0, which is a valid seed producing a known, reproducible world. To get a different world each time, type an arbitrary string — your phone number, today's date, anything.
- Are Valheim seeds case sensitive?
- Yes. Seed strings are case sensitive, so 'Asgard' and 'asgard' produce different worlds. There is a practical length limit (20–30 characters works fine), and any string works — they are not secret codes.
- Can you change a seed on an existing world?
- No. The seed is baked into the world file (.db and .fwl) the moment the world is generated. If you switch servers on a rented host you are not changing a seed — you are generating a brand new world file. Copy your world files before swapping so you do not lose progress.
