How to Beat Kall Fimbulbringer Solo — The Closed Prison, the Spirit Gauntlet and the Long Bar

Where Kall Fimbulbringer’s altar spawns
Verified (1.0, re-checked against 1.0.16): The three-phase HP split (10,000 / 7,000 / 30,000, ~47,000 total), the resistance profile and the rewards (Crown Jewel, Sacrificial Blood) are confirmed. Since 1.0.16, the spawns during the boss fight stay inside the arena (the earlier out-of-area spawn and rendering glitches are fixed), so Phase 2’s spirit gauntlet now plays out as described. Tactics are community-verified from 1.0 playthroughs. See our verification workflow.
The solo loop
Kall is the only fight where three walls stack on top of each other, and solo you face all of them with no one to share them:
- Enter The Prison at maximum buff — fire and frost resistance, full food, meads, Rested. There is no safe pause inside; the inactive moment before he activates is your only top-up window.
- Phase 1 is a spacing game — mid range against the tendrils, shield up for the chains, sideways dodge for the spinning throw, gaps for the Spike Rain. The summon staff holds aggro so you can breathe between his combos.
- Phase 2 is a survival gauntlet — two spirits at a time, no chasing kills. Clear the pair in front, run to the far edge when Moder’s ground attack telegraphs, and let the gauntlet thin out.
- Phase 3 is a resource fight — the 30,000 HP bar is the longest in the game, so stamina mead before each opening and preserved food are what decide it.
The kill ends the game: the Sacrificial Blood is what you offer at the Meadows’ Sacrificial Stones to complete Valheim.
Why this differs from a group fight
In a group, Phase 2 is two players each taking a spirit pair, and Phase 3 has a healer-style rotation with food and meads. Solo, you are the whole rotation:
- The gauntlet doubles — two spirits at once with no teammate splitting them means every wave is a full fight on its own, which is why the summon staff (aggro + crowd control) matters far more solo than in a group.
- There is no reset — The Prison gives you no safe pause, so each attempt has to start at maximum buff and the long bar punishes any food you spent in the wrong phase.
- Arrows are not your answer — they are weak against several aspects (notably Yagluth’s), so a solo player cannot fall back on a bow the way earlier bosses allow; blunt or slash plus the staff is the whole kit.

Buy me a coffeeFrequently asked questions
- Why is Kall so much harder solo?
- Three things stack: The Prison is a closed arena with no safe pause, Phase 2 runs two boss spirits at the same time (in a group, one player takes each), and Phase 3 is the longest HP bar in the game. Solo you are the tank, the DPS and the summon-staff utility at once, with no reset to reload food.
- What is the best solo setup for Kall?
- A top-tier Nord or Thunderblood sledge (blunt) or Nord greatsword (slash) for damage, plus a summon staff such as the Spirit Caller for aggro and crowd control. Activate fire and frost resistance, a full health-and-stamina meal set, healing and stamina meads and Rested before entering — his later-phase attacks deal both fire and frost.
- How do I survive Phase 2 solo?
- Do not chase kills. Two spirits are active at the same time until the last pair, so keep your distance, stay on the move, and clear the two in front of you before the next pair replaces them. Moder's aspect is the toughest part because of her massive ground attack — when it telegraphs, run to the far edge of the arena. Arrows are weak against several aspects (notably Yagluth's), which is why the summon staff matters more solo.
- How long does Kall take solo?
- It is the longest fight in the game: about 47,000 HP across three phases (10,000 / 7,000 / 30,000), and the middle phase is a gauntlet of the previous bosses' spirits. Solo with top-tier gear, full food and both fire and frost resistance, expect a multi-kill attempt — The Prison gives you no safe pause, so each attempt has to start at maximum buff.
