How to Report a Bug in Valheim

Found something broken — a quest that will not progress, a crash on load, a tamed animal that vanished? Here is the official path to get it to Iron Gate, and what to include so it can actually be reproduced.

Where to report

  • Bugs and technical problems: the official support form at valheimgame.com/support. The same page also lists currently known issues — check it first, your bug may already be tracked.
  • Suggestions and feedback: the official Valheim Discord, in the #suggestions channel. Discord is for ideas, not bug reports.
  • Translation mistakes: also go through the support form. (The studio has stated it does not recruit additional localizers.)

Iron Gate does not list a public support email for bug reports — the form is the official intake.

What to include in a report

A report the team can reproduce is worth fifty vague ones. Before submitting, gather:

  1. Game version (shown on the main menu) and platform — Steam PC, Xbox/Windows Store, or Steam Deck.
  2. Where it happened — single-player, hosted world, or a dedicated server.
  3. Exact steps to reproduce, in order. “It broke after I did X, then Y, then Z” beats “it’s broken”.
  4. World seed and character name, if the bug is world-specific.
  5. Screenshots or a short clip of the problem.
  6. What you already tried — restarting, verifying files, disabling mods.

Where your saves and logs live

If the support form asks for logs or a save file, they live in the game’s data folder:

Platform Path
Windows %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim
Steam Deck / Linux ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim

Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim into the Windows address bar (or open %AppData%, go up one level, then into LocalLow) to jump straight there. This folder holds your worlds, characters and log output — copy it somewhere safe before major updates.

Before you report

  • Verify game files in Steam (right-click Valheim → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files) — a corrupted install mimics a dozen different bugs.
  • Remove mods and retry. Modded installs are outside what the support form is designed for; if the bug disappears without mods, report it to the mod author instead.
  • Note whether it happens every time. “Always reproduces in 3 steps” gets fixed much faster than “happened once last week”.
  • Back up the save folder first — see the paths above.

A note on lost progress

Per the official FAQ, Iron Gate has no access to player save or character data and cannot restore lost worlds or characters. The .db.old and .fwl.old backup files that appear in the save folder are automatic backups from previous saves — renaming them (removing the .old suffix) is the only in-place recovery option, and it works only if the backup predates the problem.

  • If the bug is about a boss, check its page in the boss database for verified stats and drops.
  • Progression problems may already be covered in the biome guides under Guides.

Frequently asked questions

How do I report a bug in Valheim?
Use Iron Gate's official support form at valheimgame.com/support/ — that is the channel the studio asks players to use for bug reports. For feature ideas, the official Discord server has a #suggestions channel instead.
Where are Valheim saves and logs stored on PC?
On Windows, saves and logs live in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim. On Steam Deck and Linux it is ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim. Back this folder up before experimenting — Iron Gate cannot restore lost worlds or characters for you.
Can Iron Gate recover my lost Valheim world or character?
No. According to the official FAQ, Iron Gate has no access to player save or character data, so lost progress cannot be restored from their side. Keeping a copy of the save folder is the only reliable protection.
