Tar Pit — Valheim Location

Tar Pit world-generation rules in Valheim 1.0: how many copies a world places, the biome and altitude it needs, its spacing and footprint, and how far the nearest copy sits from spawn.

Resource Plains Verified 1.0

Find Tar Pit on the map The map centres the first copy it finds in the world on screen.

If the name comes up struck through, this world has no room for it — type your own seed and the map looks again.

Nearest copy over 600 sampled worlds generated by our world map: closest seen 2,975 m, typical 3,037 m, and in 9 worlds out of 10 within 3,105 m — straight-line from the spawn area.

How it generates

Prefab Per world Biome area Altitude Min spacing Footprint
TarPit2_1 20 Median above 3 m — 25 m radius
TarPit1_1 50 Median above 3 m — 20 m radius
TarPit3_1 100 Median above 3 m — 14 m radius
TarPit2 16 Median above 5 m ≥ 128 m 25 m radius
TarPit1 100 Median above 5 m ≥ 128 m 20 m radius
TarPit3 100 Median above 5 m ≥ 128 m 14 m radius
  • Biome area — “Median” means the zone and all eight of its neighbours must share the biome, so it never generates on a biome border; “Everything” may place anywhere inside the biome.
  • Footprint is the exclusion radius the generator keeps clear around the piece, not the size of the structure you walk into.
  • Per world counts placement attempts, so a number here is an upper bound — terrain checks decide how many actually land (see the sampled-worlds figures above). unique is a separate flag: the table checks it once before placement begins, to skip re-rolling these on a world that already exists, and it does not cap the attempts a fresh world makes.
  • Terrain tolerance — the generator allows up to 1.5 / 1.5 / 1.5 / 1.5 / 1.5 / 1.5 m of height change across the footprint (no minimum) .

Common questions

How many "Tar Pit" does one Valheim world place?
Tar Pit is placed by 6 separate generator rules — TarPit2_1: 20 placement attempts; TarPit1_1: 50 placement attempts; TarPit3_1: 100 placement attempts; TarPit2: 16 placement attempts; TarPit1: 100 placement attempts; TarPit3: 100 placement attempts.
Where does Tar Pit spawn?
Tar Pit generates in Plains, under the “Median” rule — the zone and all eight of its neighbours must share the biome. Altitude: above 3 m or above 5 m.
How far is the nearest Tar Pit from spawn?
Measured over 600 sampled worlds, the closest copy was 2,975 m from the spawn area, the typical distance was 3,037 m, and in 9 worlds out of 10 it sat within 3,105 m. All distances are straight-line.
How much space does Tar Pit need to generate?
The generator keeps a 25 m exclusion radius clear around each placement and requires at least 128 m to the nearest similar placement, with terrain varying by no more than 1.5 m across the footprint. The exclusion radius is clearance the terrain must offer, not the size of the structure you walk into.
